Born in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, to Dutch parents, Andreas Lodewijk Schmidt has lived in ten countries across five continents before eventually settling in Milan, Italy.
After early work as a tropical hydrologist in Kenya, India and Zimbabwe, he spent more than two decades in technology, working at companies including Accenture, eBay and Google before founding and leading his own technology company as CEO. He later became chairman of a listed technology company.
Art represents his third professional chapter.
Driven by a desire to create, explore and express different parts of himself, Schmidt made the deliberate decision to start from scratch once again — this time placing art and music at the center of his life and work.
His work spans hard-edge painting, photo series and data-driven visual systems. Across these different forms, Schmidt works with repetition, accumulation, color and structured systems built from many individual elements.
Alongside his visual work, he writes and performs music with the Milan-based garage rock band SUPERDRE.
