Line Paintings

Taking 7 lines for a walk - B

2021

Most of my professional life I've been using the left side of my brain, a lot. There was creativity, but it was mostly based on logic, analysis and sequential thinking. And there is beauty in that too. A piece of software code or an API can and should be beautiful, in my opinion.

With making art, I want to explore and exercise the right side of my brain more, and let the more funky side of me take the steering wheel. This is a bit scary for me, as it doesn't come natural to me, especially in a new environment. To push myself forward, and being a fervent student of Paul Klee's works, I followed one of the first exercises that he would have his students at the Bauhaus school do: to take a line for a walk.

I've made 3 paintings with 7 lines, 3 paintings with 4 lines and finally I worked up the courage to make paintings with just one line.

As a child, I used to make drawings with one line all the time. I thought it would be rather embarrassing to do this again as a 49-year old. But actually it was great to reconnect with that part of me.
